School of Journalism & Strategic Media
Inform. Entertain. Design. Engage.
In the MTSU School of Journalism and Strategic Media, students get to learn from experts in their fields and gain real-world experience by partaking in exciting opportunities. Whether it’s joining our student-run newsroom, calling games for ESPN+, or joining our in-house advertising agency, the SoJSM offers something for every student looking for a career in media!
MTSU’s internationally recognized and accredited School of Journalism and Strategic Media equips students with the professional knowledge and hands-on experience necessary for success in a dynamic media landscape. Our education model balances professional skills with a broader understanding of key concepts related to traditional and emerging media. Through our core classes, all students gain a solid foundation in digital skills, professional writing, and relevant technologies, going hands-on with top-of-the-line equipment as they learn how to use video, audio, photography, and social media to tell stories, build audiences, and design portfolios.
A Flexible Degree
The School of Journalism and Strategic Media offers three degrees: a B.S. in Journalism, with classes tailored by concentration, a B.S. in Advertising and Public Relations, with a focus in either area, and a B.S. in Interactive Media. Furthermore, we are working to develop online and mixed methods for pursuing a degree; for example, students in the Media Studies concentration can take in-person classes, online classes, or a mix of both!
What Can You Study?
The School of Journalism and Strategic Media is part of the broader Scott Borchetta College of Media and Entertainment. Our college includes the Center for Innovation in Media, bringing together the University’s two campus radio stations, WMOT (our nonprofit NPR station) and WMTS (our student-run station) as well as Sidelines, MTSU’s student-run, editorially-independent news organization. This space enhances the student experience with further opportunities to acquire and use digital media skills!
These concentrations provide practical skills and experience through classes, lab courses, fieldwork, and internships, all while acquainting students with knowledge of the history, theory, ethics, and law of media communication. No matter what path students choose, they’ll receive a well-rounded education that gives them the tools to succeed in an ever-evolving media environment.
In addition to these undergraduate concentrations, we also offer two graduate programs, providing students with opportunities to further specialize and advance their careers in media and communication fields.
Students may minor in the School of Journalism and Strategic Media. Options include Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising and Media Design.
